Paul Torres

Head Coach

Coach Paul Torres played six years professionally at the highest levels in Sweden and Norway. Prior to becoming a professional, he was recruited by the University of Maryland in 2009, where he played for two years. During his youth, he played for the Bethesda Roadrunners, winning 3 state and 2 regional championships. He later captained the DC United U16 and U18 Academy Teams, won the U17 MLS Cup championship, and captained two teams to the Youth MLS cup championships. Paul was twice named DC United Academy Player of the Year and U-17 MLS Cup MVP.  In 2008 and 2009, he was selected to the US Soccer Federation U16 starting IX, and Region 1 U18 starting IX in 2009. Paul also had the opportunity to train with the D.C. United first team for several years, starting at age 16, which helped to launch his Maryland and Europe careers. ​ He is passionate about one-on-one coaching, bringing together strong groups, and mentoring players who aspire to elevate their game and work hard to realize their full potential. Paul Torres is best known for his technical skills, versatility, and his commitment to developing the next generation of soccer talent. A product of the U.S. soccer system, Torres has played at various professional levels both domestically and internationally, As a player, Torres was recognized for his ability to play in midfield or attacking roles, known for his vision, passing, and leadership on the pitch. After his playing career, Paul Torres transitioned into coaching and youth development, founding Next Star Soccer, a premier soccer academy focused on cultivating young talent and providing them with the tools to succeed at higher levels of the game. The academy emphasizes technical skills, tactical understanding, and mental preparation, ensuring players are well-rounded and ready to take the next step in their soccer journey. Next Star Soccer is known for its personalized approach to training, offering camps, clinics, and one-on-one sessions for players of all ages. Under Torres’ guidance, the academy has built a reputation for developing technically proficient and tactically intelligent players, with many of its graduates moving on to college programs, academies, and even professional teams. Paul Torres' passion for the game and dedication to nurturing future stars make him a key figure in soccer development. Paul aims to help shape the future of American soccer through his work with Next Star Soccer and focus on creating multi dimensional players who can compete internationally.

Phillip Gyau

Head Coach

Phillip is a highly respected figure in American soccer, both for his impressive playing career and his exceptional contributions as a coach. Born on February 7, 1966, Gyau is widely recognized for his speed, versatility, and technical ability during his playing days, as well as his deep understanding of the game, which he has successfully translated into coaching. Gyau began his soccer journey in the U.S., playing for Howard University, where he was a standout performer, helping the team reach the NCAA tournament and cementing his status as one of the top collegiate players of his time. His success at Howard University led to a professional career that saw him play for teams both in the United States and abroad, including stints with the Maryland Bays in the American Professional Soccer League (APSL), where he was known for his attacking flair and goal-scoring ability. Phillip Gyau also made his mark on the international stage as a member of the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), earning several caps during the late 1980s and early 1990s. His international experience included participation in key qualifiers and friendly matches, further solidifying his reputation as a talented forward. His time abroad also included a stint in Germany, where he further developed his understanding of the international game. Coaching Career: Following his playing career, Phillip Gyau transitioned into coaching, where he has had a profound impact on the development of soccer in the U.S. His coaching philosophy emphasizes technical skill development, creativity, and understanding of the game. He has worked extensively in youth soccer, particularly with U.S. Soccer Development Academy programs, and has been a guiding influence for numerous young players aspiring to play at the collegiate and professional levels. One of his most notable coaching roles is as the head coach of Howard University's men's soccer team, where he has continued to shape young athletes, leading the team to success and helping to restore Howard's storied soccer program. Gyau's commitment to excellence in coaching has not only helped elevate the program but also inspired a new generation of players. Gyau has also contributed to the U.S. Futsal National Team, serving as head coach and leveraging his vast playing experience to guide the team on the international stage. His efforts have helped promote futsal as a critical component of player development in the U.S., emphasizing ball control, quick decision-making, and tactical awareness. Legacy and Impact: Beyond his individual achievements, Phillip Gyau's legacy is tied to his influence on the next generation of American soccer players. His son, Joe Gyau, followed in his footsteps and has gone on to play professionally and represent the U.S. national team, a testament to the impact of Phillip's guidance both as a father and a coach. Gyau’s commitment to the sport, from his days as a dynamic player to his role as a transformative coach, has made him one of the most respected figures in American soccer. His dedication to youth development, collegiate success, and international competition has had a lasting impact on the game in the United States.

Steve Birnbaum

Steve Birnbaum, former 8 year  captain of D.C. United and U.S. Men's National Team veteran, brings years of professional experience and leadership to our coaching team. Known for his defensive prowess, aerial dominance, and commitment to the game, Steve was a key figure in MLS since 2014 and continues to excel both on and off the field. Learn more about his career and coaching philosophy. Steve was born on January 23, 1991, in Newport Beach, California, and quickly rose through the ranks of American soccer, excelling in youth soccer before playing college soccer at the University of California, Berkeley. At Cal, he earned All-American honors, solidifying his status as one of the top defensive prospects in the country. In 2014, Birnbaum was selected as the No. 2 overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft by D.C. United, a club where he would go on to make a name for himself as a key figure in their backline. Known for his physical presence, excellent reading of the game, and leadership on the field, Birnbaum quickly became a fan favorite and a stalwart in defense. He has consistently been among the MLS leaders in aerial duels won, and his ability to score from set-pieces has added an offensive edge to his game. Birnbaum's leadership qualities were recognized early on, and he was named captain of D.C. United, where he has led the team through various seasons with resilience and professionalism. His consistency and defensive reliability earned him multiple call-ups to the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), where he has represented his country in international competitions, including World Cup qualifiers and friendlies. Off the field, Steve Birnbaum is known for his dedication to his community and philanthropic efforts. He has been involved in various charity initiatives, focusing on youth soccer development and health-related causes. As one of MLS’s most respected defenders, Birnbaum continues to be a critical figure for both club and country, recognized not just for his technical abilities, but also for his leadership, sportsmanship, and contributions to the growth of soccer in the United States.

Marco "El Diablo" Etcheverry

is a Bolivian soccer legend and one of Major League Soccer's greatest players, renowned for his creative genius, playmaking ability, and leadership on the field. Born on September 26, 1970, in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Etcheverry began his professional career at a young age, playing for several top clubs in South America, including Bolívar, Oriente Petrolero, and Colo-Colo in Chile, where he developed a reputation as an electrifying midfielder with vision, dribbling skills, and an uncanny ability to dictate the tempo of the game. Etcheverry’s greatest success came when he joined D.C. United in the inaugural season of Major League Soccer (MLS)in 1996. As the team's attacking midfielder and captain, he became the heart and soul of the squad, guiding D.C. United to three MLS Cup championships (1996, 1997, 1999) and winning four Eastern Conference titles. His flair for creating chances, delivering pinpoint passes, and scoring decisive goals quickly made him a fan favorite and a league icon. Etcheverry's on-field brilliance earned him numerous accolades, including MLS MVP in 1998, and he was a consistent presence in the MLS Best XI. His ability to control the game and his fierce competitive spirit helped elevate the level of play in MLS during its formative years. Widely regarded as one of the league's greatest-ever players, he was later named to the MLS All-Time Best XI and honored as one of the league's top 25 players of all time. On the international stage, Etcheverry was the face of Bolivian soccer during the 1990s, earning over 70 caps for his national team. His most notable achievement with Bolivia came when he helped lead the team to qualification for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, Bolivia's first appearance in the tournament since 1950. His role in Bolivia’s runner-up finish in the 1997 Copa América also solidified his legacy as one of his country's greatest footballers. Known for his fiery personality and passionate style of play, Etcheverry earned the nickname “El Diablo” for his devilish dribbling and ability to torment opposing defenses. His charisma, both on and off the field, made him a beloved figure not only in Bolivia but across the soccer world. After retiring, Etcheverry remained involved in the sport through coaching and ambassadorial roles. His impact on Bolivian and American soccer continues to be celebrated, with his contributions to D.C. United and MLS cementing his legacy as one of the game’s greatest ambassadors in the United States. Marco Etcheverry’s combination of creativity, leadership, and passion made him one of the most influential players in the history of MLS and a national hero in Bolivia, where he is regarded as one of the finest footballers to ever represent the country.

We are incredibly honored and excited to announce that Chris Pontius, former US Men’s National Team player, MLS All Star, 11-year MLS Veteran is part of Next Star as a Pro Coach/Mentor. Within the structure of Next Star’s proven methodologies and philosophies, Chris’ tremendous success and experience on and off the field will make for invaluable and unforgettable lessons for any player, and especially those in midfield and attacking positions.

 

Chris Pontius discovered his passion for soccer at a young age. His early years were marked by dedication and a strong work ethic, traits that would become his trademark throughout his professional career. Pontius attended the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), where he played college soccer for the UCSB Gauchos. During his collegiate career, Pontius made a name for himself as a dynamic and versatile player. His contributions to the team's success were instrumental in UCSB winning the NCAA National Championship in 2006. Chris Pontius's professional journey began when he was selected seventh overall by D.C. United in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft. His impact on the team was immediate, as he made his debut in the season opener and quickly established himself as a key player. Pontius's ability to play multiple positions, including midfielder and forward, made him a valuable asset for D.C. United.

Patrick Mullins

Pro Coach

Patrick Mullins is a talented and highly respected American soccer player known for his goal-scoring ability, versatility, and leadership on the field. Born on February 5, 1992, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Mullins established himself as one of the top forwards in the country during his collegiate career, before going on to make a significant impact in Major League Soccer (MLS). Collegiate Career Mullins attended the University of Maryland, where he became one of the most decorated players in college soccer history. Playing for the Maryland Terrapins, Mullins was a two-time recipient of the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy in 2012 and 2013, awarded to the best collegiate soccer player in the country. During his time at Maryland, he helped lead the team to two NCAA College Cup appearances and solidified his reputation as a prolific goal scorer and clutch performer in big moments. Mullins finished his college career with 47 goals and 35 assists, making him one of the most lethal and complete forwards in the history of Maryland soccer. His blend of technical ability, physicality, and soccer IQ made him a highly sought-after prospect heading into MLS. Professional Career In the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, Mullins was selected 11th overall by New England Revolution, where he made an immediate impact in his rookie season, helping the team reach the MLS Cup Final. Known for his positioning, clinical finishing, and work rate, Mullins quickly earned a reputation as a reliable forward capable of delivering in key moments. After his time with New England, Mullins went on to play for several MLS clubs, including New York City FC, D.C. United, Columbus Crew SC, and Toronto FC. His most notable stretch came during his time with D.C. United, where he enjoyed a breakout season in 2017, scoring 13 goals, including a memorable four-goal performance in a single match against San Jose Earthquakes, a feat rarely seen in MLS. Despite facing injuries and tough competition for starting spots, Mullins was consistently praised for his positive attitude, work ethic, and ability to make an impact whether starting or coming off the bench. His versatility allowed him to play both as a central forward and in wider attacking roles, making him a valuable asset to the teams he played for. Legacy and Contributions Mullins' career has been defined by his resilience, professionalism, and knack for scoring important goals. Over the course of his MLS career, he became a fan favorite at several clubs due to his determination and dedication to the game. Known for his leadership on and off the field, Mullins was respected by teammates and coaches alike for his influence in the locker room and his mentorship to younger players. Though he never earned a regular place with the U.S. Men’s National Team, his success at the collegiate and professional levels, combined with his standout moments in MLS, have earned him a lasting legacy in American soccer. Post-Playing Career After retiring from professional soccer, Mullins has remained involved in the game, contributing to soccer development and using his platform to mentor young players. His experience, both as a top collegiate athlete and a seasoned professional, makes him a valuable figure in American soccer, particularly in youth development and coaching. Patrick Mullins will be remembered not only for his individual achievements and moments of brilliance on the field, but for his leadership, dedication, and contributions to the growth of soccer in the United States.

Juan Daniel Ramírez

Head Coach

Juan Daniel Ramírez is a current professional player for Loudoun United FC born in Medellin, Colombia and raised in the DMV area. Juan started his youth career with Bethesda Lions coached by Emile Mbouh and Phillip Gyau, which quickly earned him a spot for the US youth national team from u13 to u16. He later played for Bethesda Academy as well as D.C. United U18. Building on the  foundation of his youth career, Juan then moved on to play internationally. Moving back to his hometown, Medellin, Colombia, he was selected to play for renowned club, Envigado FC for two years. He then had the opportunity to travel to Brazil where he spent time training with professional clubs such as Ponte Preta and AD Guarulhos. These experiences led him to play in Spain for AD Alcorcón and Fuenlabrada Reserves in 2020-2022. 

 

Juan now joins Next Star as our coach. Through group sessions to one-on-ones he’s eager to guide young players in setting a strong foundation for themselves while building a positive mindset and the skill of perseverance.
